NICE Medical Technologies Guidance

CEDAR is an External Assessment Group (EAG) to NICE in the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme (MTEP) and contributes to the development of the published NICE medical technologies guidance. NICE states, "Medical technologies guidance is designed to help the NHS adopt efficient and cost effective medical devices and diagnostics more rapidly and consistently. The types of products which might be included are medical devices that deliver treatment such as those implanted during surgical procedures, technologies that give greater independence to patients, and diagnostic devices or tests used to detect or monitor medical conditions" (NICE, 2011).

CEDAR carries out the following activities during the development of medical technologies guidance:

  • Critique company's clinical and cost evidence submission 
  • Conduct new literature search to identify clinical and cost evidence where required
  • Summarise and critically appraise of newly identified evidence 
  • Critique company's cost model
  • Conduct new economic modelling work where required
  • Attend NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee
