About CEDAR

CEDAR is a combined NHS-academic research organisation which sits within both Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) and Cardiff University. This collaborative structure provides CEDAR with access to NHS-based clinical experts and patient groups, as well as internationally recognised academic researchers. CEDAR is staffed by a highly experienced and multi-disciplinary team of both NHS and Cardiff University employees. We are based at Cardiff Medicentre within the grounds of the University Hospital of Wales.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

CEDAR is part of Cardiff and Vale UHB, one of the largest NHS organisations providing healthcare in the UK. CEDAR's position within Cardiff and Vale UHB provides us with the following support services:

  • access to specialist clinical areas and expertise at major teaching hospitals
  • IT technical support and secure IT systems with access to the NHS network
  • NHS Wales e-library for health
  • access to unpublished data/information such as NHS supply data, audit data, hospital episode statistics and draft British / international standards.

Cardiff University

CEDAR also sits within the Cardiff University School of Engineering’s Medical Engineering Group (MEG). The School is rated in the top 10 research led engineering schools in the UK (RAE 2014). The Medical Engineering Group includes research in medical imaging, implants, motion analysis, forensic engineering, diagnostics and other medical technologies. This research enables engineering solutions that will have positive benefits for patients and the health care industry. 

Collaborative working with Cardiff University provides CEDAR with:

  • links to academic research groups within MEG and other University Schools
  • electronic resources including a wide range of journals and databases
  • staff training and development opportunities
