Specialist Level 2 Neurorehabilitation in Wales

Background

The Strategic Neurological Network is collaborating with CEDAR to conduct a scoping exercise in relation to the Neurorehabilitation pathways in Wales. Currently in Wales there is a lack of service provision for Level 2 neurorehabilitation for patients who are not suitable for Specialist Services funded for by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee and also sit outside of Stroke pathways. Conditions that often require level 2 neurorehabilitation include, but are not limited to, traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, multiple sclerosis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome, which require intensive multi-disciplinary rehabilitation from a team with specialist knowledge. The impacts of this unmet need include poorer health outcomes, longer hospital stays and greater long-term care needs and associated costs.

CEDAR’s role

CEDAR undertook a brief scoping exercise of the available literature to assess the current evidence base. This included engaging key stakeholders in Wales through during focus groups, to explore and describe the current situation and its impact on other rehab pathways, people’s access to rehab and people’s outcome, with the aim of identifying the gaps in the rehabilitation pathway.

Findings

CEDAR’s scoping report highlights a clear gap in Level 2 neurorehabilitation provision in Wales. The work brings together evidence from published literature and insights from stakeholder engagement. It identifies an unmet need for these services in Wales, and highlights where current provision may not meet the needs of people with neurological conditions who require intensive, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation.
