Paediatric Integrated Care Clinic: A Social Return on Investment (SROI)

Background

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have been trialling a new model of paediatric care provided in three General Practice clusters in Cardiff. This new model is called the Paediatric Integrated Care Clinic where, outpatients’ appointments are held in the GP surgery rather than a hospital setting, with both the GP and paediatrician being present in the appointment. The hope is that children will have better health outcomes, less distress from attending appointments, increased communication between primary and secondary care, reduced waiting times, reduced time off work/school and increase discharges back to primary care.

CEDAR’s role

CEDAR is undertaking a Social Return on Investment (SROI) to assess the social value of the Paediatric Integrated Care clinic. We are conducting interviews with stakeholders to find out how this service impacts them. This will be followed by surveys to quantify and value the identified outcomes.

Findings

CEDAR found that the delivery of the paediatric integrated care MDT clinic model within three clusters in CAV UHB has social and environmental benefits compared to the traditional hospital outpatient model. Staff have improved job satisfaction, and families spend less time off work and school, reduced travel, and increased well-being. These social and environmental improvements lead to an SROI of £5.61 for every £1 invested, driven by improved mutual understanding between staff members, and improved emotional well-being for parents.
